ACL SURGERY – Physical Therapy?
Question by shalom k.: ACL SURGERY – physical therapy?
So it’s been about 2 1/2 months since my ACL reconstruction surgery and am wondering at this point how necessary physical therapy is. Insurance covers most of it but it still costs me 20$ a session and being a student and all it’s difficult to shell out 80$ a month for physical therapy. It seems like everything i do that i can do at home or at the gym…the only benefit i really get at physical therapy is the massage….and if you type in ‘acl physical therapy’ in any search engines you get loads of information.
So my question is now how important physical therapy is (I know its extremely important), but how important is it to go to a clinic and do the exercises. Again, i feel as if i can do everything i do that at the gym (i have a membership) or at home.

If you are doing things that you can be doing on your own, it’s time to decrease the frequency of therapy. Massage really has no purpose after ACL surgery…especially after 2 1/2 months.
If you’ve attained full range of motion, I’d discuss with your PT cutting down to one time a week or every other week only for reassessments and to have your program progressed…then take what you’ve learned and do it at the gym.
Most typically, PT lasts anywhere between 3 to 6 months after ACL surgery.

physical therapy day 4 after ACL reconstruction.flv – I had my ACL reconstruction surgery 3/29/12 Performed by Dr.Jon D. Koman a former assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles. I was discharged from the hospital with brace, that I had to wear 24/7 for 4 weeks, locked at night and unlocked during the day. I was suppose to do thigh muscle exercise and follow p with physical therapy ASAP. My physical therapy was scheduled for Wednesday April 4 2012, which is on a 5th day after my surgery. In the mean while I was watching a lot of you tube videos and trying to get back with my motion and strength on my own. In case of any questions i could be reached via e-mail [email protected]
