How Can I Help My Father Communicate With Us After His Stroke?

Question by Scott M: How can I help my Father communicate with us after his stroke?
My Father suffered a massive stroke on April 13, 2007. The stroke paralyzed the right side of his body from the top of his throat to the bottom of his knee (all on the right side). He has made amazing strides in his physical recovery. However he is unable to speak with the exception of the words “No, Nu, Na” Both my Mother and I sit in front of him for Hours at a time listening to him try to speak over and over again. He is 45 and in a nursing home. He doesn’t want to be there but he can’t come home until we can communicate with him. He doesn’t feel that his speech therapists are helping him – they use pictures boards and tapes to try to help him. I discovered yesterday that I believe that he can read. Today I will do a test by writing the words “Red” and “Black” and “Green” and “Blue” on index cards while laying the corresponding crayons in front of him. If he picks them up as I hold up the cards then we know he can read. Is there some way I can use this to help him?
Each week we meet with with the nursing home to get a detailed report of his progress – his last speech therapist report revealed that when he is trying to work with him he rolls his eyes when they bring out the pictures boards and the juvenile tapes they use- they say that he “acts” like he is capable of so much more and that he “feels” like it is childs play. But in his defense he does try to do the work – its just he can’t convey what he wants to say by pointing to giraffes and zebras and umbrellas all day. So in my question we don’t actually know what he is feeling just how he acts out scenarios with his body language.

Make sure you keep good eye contact and make a deal with him – eyes to the left/ right for “yes”, eyes up/ down for “no”, or something like that.

If he cant communicate though, how do you know what he thinks about his speech therapists??
