Shoulder Dislocation Physical Therapy Help?

Question by PT: shoulder dislocation physical therapy help?
Hi, I recently dislocated my shoulder exactly 15 days ago and the my doctor told me after x-rays i dislocated but didnt really tear anything more but my ligaments are stretched. RIght now I do feel like I can move my arm regularly except it’s a bit weaker. I have most of my mobility back but I am scared to move it around besides simple movements in case of redamaging my shoulder. I was wondering can anyone provide me with a week by week physical therapy guide since I do not have the time for physical therapy class. THANK YOU!

If only physical therapy were that simple: get a diagnosis of X and do exercise ________. It’s really not that simple. You need a thorough evaluation from a PT to find out what exercises are appropriate for you. What is appropriate for one patient with a shoulder dislocation may be completely inappropriate for the next. You really need professional guidance for this, and they should be more than willing to set you up on a home based program if its appropriate with follow ups for progression of the program.

Was your dislocation complete or partial? Was it your first dislocation or has this occurred in the past? Was the dislocation anterior, posterior, superior, or inferior? Was the dislocation the result of a traumatic incident? How old are you? All of these factors and several more are VERY important when considering what you should do about your condition. FYI: young people tend to dislocate again and again and often wind up getting surgery because they don’t take things seriously enough to go see a physical therapist – you should make the time.
